RE: Don West - Correction And Apology
In reference to a recent list of the 10 most controversial comments by sports memorabilia celebrity Don West -
I’m afraid I must correct a glaring error in this posting. Controversial quote #5 is listed as “Griffey!” In fact, the fifth-most controversial Don West quote should read as follows:
5. “You snooze, you lose!”
Don’s job was to give his watchers the best deals on the most unbelievable sports collectibles. But, that was his only obligation. If you chose not to act on a deal that was just incredible, he could not care less. And he told you that to your face. In Don’s world, sleep was for losers who weren’t dedicated to sports collectibles and he felt no sympathy for that attitude.
I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize for this horrendous oversight. In the admittedly modest history of this website, we have never printed a factual error until now. Rest assured that I have severely disciplined the young boy to whom I contract out most of my work. Nonetheless, I take full responsibility for this oversight. I’m so heartbroken right now, but I will do everything to regain everyone’s trust. Top ten lists are really important and I will always take the responsibility seriously.

Keith, I’ve decided to annotate this article by creating a running list of the ways Don West describes the contents of the ‘1975 to 2000 Million Dollar Rookie Giveaway’ Shop At Home item during the course of this eight-minute forty-five-second clip:
1. “this is unreal”
2. “this is really unbelievable, folkssss”
3. “what we in the business call the ‘big daddies’ baby”
4. “the big dogs … the big dogs”
5. “this is the easiest decision you’ll ever make as far as graded cards go”
6. “I mean this is absolutely insane”
7. “like I said, baby, this is what it’s all about, man”
8. “you folks know it and I know it, this is what card collecting is all about”
9. “this is why we do it … right here”
10. “this is why we do it”
11. “this is what it’s all about”
12. “unbelievable”
13. “ab-so-lutely unbelievable”
14. “it’s only $149 on stretch pay!”
15. “that is the grand daddy … the million dollar giveaway!”
16. “man, that is just unbelievable”
17. “that is just un-be-liev-able”
And then immediately after finishing with the Rookie Giveway, he throws to the break saying, “we’ll be right back with the greatest item you’ve ever seen in your life don’t go anywhere.”
God do I love that man.
I remember years back he was selling Pokemon cards. He was saying something like,”I just love these cards! I love these characters! This is great! I have a big collection of these cards!” Then a minute later he screws up and calls them “PokeMAN” cards. Someone corrects him and he says something like, “Well, I guess I don’t know them that well but these cards are great! I love ‘em!”
It’s a major league mess up if you originally say you have a whole collection of these cards and then a minute later you get the name wrong and admit you are not totally familiar with the cards. He still sold them though and I guess that’s what counts.
