The Happening Is Horrible
The DVD special features better include an alternate movie.
You know how every M. Night Shyamalan movie has some big secret? Like how in The Sixth Sense Bruce Willis was a ghost? And in Unbreakable Samuel L. Jackson was mean? And in Signs something about aliens? (didn’t see Signs) And in The Village it was all a theme park? And in Lady in the Water CHECK WIKIPEDIA?
Well, The Happening is no exception, it’s just that in this one the big secret is never revealed. And that big secret is how this piece of shit ever got made.
The Happening is and is heavily marketed as "the first Rated R movie from the director of The Sixth Sense." A fairly shameless hook if you ask me, but not nearly as shameless as the next one’s going to be: "the first Rated X (NC-17, I guess) movie from the director of The Sixth Sense." I really think that’s all this guy’s got left.
This movie is really bad. The dialogue is AWFUL and I’m pretty sure the cast memorized it phonetically. The most impressive performance is that of John Leguizamo who manages to pull off a Jewish math teacher and he’s not even a math teacher in real life!
I’m not going to go as far as to say this movie about a strange illness that makes people kill themselves will make the audience want to do the same; I’m sure a half dozen critics already have (haven’t checked rottentomates yet).
But I will say it is really bad, and not in a funny-bad way like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but in a bad-bad way like, "Jesus this is bad, and not in a funny-bad way like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This just sucks."

The Happening is aggressively bad — suspiciously bad — like a boxer throwing a fight.
Since you never saw Signs maybe this explanation will be a good companion to your piece.
